Starting Out

What is up Venture Church? Michael Metcalf here. Myself My Wife Michelle and Bayside Church want to say hello. So grateful to be joining you from Roseville, CA in a series This is Living.

We start out in life

  • Happy
  • Hopeful
  • Whole

Joshua 1:1-9 New International Version (NIV)

1 After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide:
2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites.
3 every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.
4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
5 No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
6 Be strong and courageous because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.
7 “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.
8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Moses the leader Has died. Joshua has to take place of a popular leader!

STEP 1: CONFIDENT FAITH

A Faith That …

  • Settles US during uncertain times
  • Strengthens US when we are weak
  • Pulls US forward into the promised Land

The question is not do we do this, but how?

Saturate Yourself With The PROMISES OF GOD

Joshua 1:3-5 (NIV)
3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses.

( Make this personal )

Gods Promises :

  • Promise #1: God Is Always with Me (I Will Not Fear)
  • Promise #2: God Is Always in Control (I Will Not Doubt)
  • Promise #3: God Is Always Good (I Will Not Despair)

Isaiah 26:3 You will keep perfect peace who’s minds are set on you

STEP 2: LIVE OUT YOUR FAITH

Joshua 1:6 (NIV)
6 Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.

You will lead these people

Joshua all of a sudden is called to lead the people to a destination: The Promised Land

  • Moved from On-Looker to a Leader
  • From Participating to Leading the Pack

If you call yourself a follower of Christ, you and I are the same way. As we move from the OLD testament proficiencies of Christ into the new testament Life of Jesus. All the way through the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, He clearly says to us: It’s time to move from on-looker to leader.

Jesus teaching in Matthew 5

Matthew 5:14-16 New International Version (NIV)

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16 The Message (MSG)

14-16 “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world.
God is not a secret to be kept.
We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.
If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you?
I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine!
Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

This is what was happening in the early church. The MISSION was now a MOVEMENT. Devotion became action. Making a difference was more important than making a point. Believers became servants, not spectators.

We have an UNMISTAKABLE MISSION. We are the local church the HOPE OF THE WORLD. If we don’t have the message of HOPE what do we have?

This is LIVING

  • To live out our faith
  • Not to Go to Church
  • To be the Church

The church is not a building, a program, a location on a map. The local church then & now is a group highly devoted people. You & I empowered by The Holy Spirit.

What does this mean practically?

A few weeks back, I met with a man and woman having difficult times. They shared some of their story with me. It turns out, they started coming to church because another couple in our church was there for them. One night they were in the middle of an argument and they reached out to the couple. The couple showed up, shared their story, and prayed with them.

They said they had never seen someone be so caring.

Then the couple invited them to Celebrate Recovery, which is a program for anyone struggling with hurt, pain, or addiction of any kind. They started coming.

The couple found out they were having some financial challenges. They didn’t call the church. They helped.

The man and woman were blown away!

Some of you are saying, “I can’t. I’ve got my own Drama.”

MY WEEK…Two Weeks ago

I had a really tough week and had to apologize to friends and family. I Had a moment where my wife had to literally had to come down hug me and tell me I don’t understand what you’re going through, but I love you anyway. In your hurt and brokenness, I love you

This is the mission

Let everyone know that in the middle of your mess, brokenness, pain, depression, and fear, the GOD of the universe came down and picked you.

On your worst week, God still loves you. He still accepts you just the way you are.

  • If you’ve ever felt unworthy, you can be a part of this mission
  • If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by life, you can be a part of this mission
  • If you ever felt left out, you can be a part of this mission
  • If you ever felt like a failure, you can be a part of this mission
  • If you ever felt unloved, you can be a part of this mission
